The collection consists of photographs documenting ninety years of PQ Corporation history. There are images of the founder, management, board of directors, and employees at work and at social functions, including sport teams and company banquets. Employees are shown in these departments: advertising and sales; chemical laboratories (Chester and Primos, Pa.); manufacturing; purchasing; traffic. There are views of office facilities in Philadelphia and Valley Forge, Pa. Over fifteen factories were photographed. The oldest views are three 19th century photographic prints of the Philadelphia plant by Samuel McMullin. The following factories are represented: Anderson, Ind.; Augusta, Ga.; Baltimore; Berkeley, Calif.; Butler, N.J.; Chester, Pa.; Chicago; Gardenville, N.Y.; Jeffersonville, Ind.; Kansas City; Massillon, Ohio; New Orleans; Philadelphia; Rahway, N.J.; South Gate (Calif.); St. Louis; Utica, Ill.; Toronto and Valley Field (Quebec), Canada.

The Elkinton Company began as a Philadelphia candle and soap shop founded by Joseph Elkinton in 1831. Joseph Scotton Elkinton (1830-1905), a Quaker, attended Westtown School in Westtown, PA, and with his brother, Thomas, went into the soap business, which later became the Philadelphia Quartz Company.
